About Waterford

Ireland’s oldest city has been welcoming internatiBallooning Over Waterfordonal travellers for over a thousand years. The fearsome Vikings arrived around 853 AD and founded a port just upriver from where the mighty Suir meets the sea. Waterford’s location ensured its rapid development as a centre for trade and commerce. Expanded by the Anglo Normans in the 12th century, Waterford spent most of the medieval period as Ireland’s second most important city, after Dublin. From 1800 the city enjoyed success as a centre of trade and travel, a commercially vibrant heritagewhich isbstill carried on today.

Modern Waterford is filled with historical sites and monuments, ancient towers and  beautifully restored city walls, castles and Viking sites, medieval  churches and 19th century follies. Waterford, however, is not stuck in the past. A full programme of festivals is run annually which has cemented Waterford’s reputation as a cultural hub in the South East of Ireland.
